First Week at Work

without comments

Last week was a great week. Hectic! I spent it attending product trainings, workshops, sitting for back-to-back daily quizes and getting to know more people in a new working environment.

I’m part of the year’s first batch of fresh recruits for the bank. To my pleasant surprise, my fellow classmates are a good lot, easy to get along with and very inclusive, lending a collegial environment to our classes.

A few left an impression on me: a male and female pair working in NRI (Non-Resident Indians) Business – responsible for attending to the financial needs of NRIs in the Asian region, both of whom are very intelligent, sharp and experienced (certainly knows alot more on economics and investing than I do!); a female former SQ cabin crew-turned-banker, who’s to be my colleague.

The two of us freshies were posted to a branch traditionally home to slightly more senior bankers and is also domain to high-level executives at the bank. I relish the thought of the challenge and look forward to learning more from these experienced hands. I’ve always admired the sophisticated soft skills of the SQ’s flight stewardesses that I know. I watched as Joanne worked her deft public relations skills in social settings and was once again, very impressed. She came across as warm, thoughtful, inclusive and genuine all at the same time. I hope to learn from everyone and am glad to be colleagues with Jo.

On her last visit here, my maternal grandmother left me with a piece of wisdom from the ages: it is far better to make ten friends than to make an enemy. I believe in this as well, and this message was reinforced from the chairman of the bank when he encouraged us to build both formal and informal network within and beyond the bank. Especially in a small city state like ours where everyone knows everyone else and things get done swiftly.

Nowadays I prefer to occupy my time with work, a source of mental stimulation to me. I feel more focused, driven and filled with a sense of mission. I don’t like the feeling of slacking off too much and having too much time on my hands as I did for most of last year. Enne (also SQ!) called me last Saturday night and after some chatting, thinks I am workaholic. (the same goes for her!)

It could be. The best time to hustle is when we’re young. :)

So Young – The Corrs

We are taking it easy
Bright and breezy
We are living it up
Just fine and dandy

We are chasing the moon
Just running wild and free
We are following through
Every dream, and every need

And it really doesn’t matter that we don’t eat
And it really doesn’t matter that we don’t sleep
It really doesn’t matter, it really doesn’t matter at all

‘Cause we were so young then
We are so young, so young now
And when tomorrow comes
We’ll just do it all again

We are caught in a haze
On these lazy summer days
We’re spending all of our nights just
A-laughing and kissing, yeah

No it really doesn’t matter if we don’t sleep
No it really doesn’t matter if we don’t sleep
It really doesn’t matter at all

And it really doesn’t matter that we don’t eat
And it really doesn’t matter that we don’t sleep
It really doesn’t matter, it really doesn’t matter at all

And it really doesn’t matter that we don’t eat
And it really doesn’t matter that we don’t sleep
It really doesn’t matter, it really doesn’t matter at all
